Testimonials

"Dear Surf's up Surf Camp and Mr. Domke,

As a past surfer myself I can't tell you how wonderful and truly awesome it was for my daughter Paula, age 13, to attend your surf camp # 1 this summer. This was by far the most "Thrilling, awesome, cool, and an experience of a life time" as quoted by my daughter!  I had a killer time dropping by on the last day of camp for an hour to see you in action and my daughter. Not only was I impressed with my daughter's progress but more so with your surf staff. Your staff was completely competent and vigilant on the shore and in the water to watch each child, help them and look out for their safety. Your exceptional character, professionalism and love for the sport and for the kids truly shone through. Surf camp has been over for a week and already I have been requested to buy green paint  to resemble "the green room", a wet suit and new board. Yikes! Thanks again for making a memorable summer for my daughter. I look forward to future camps with Surf's up Surf Camp and who knows, perhaps this will get me back on my board as well!

Thanks again, Diana Hardesty, Lebec, Ca."
"My daughter and I attended a Saturday Surfing birthday party that Surf's Up Surf School put on in September. The kids and parents all had a great time. With instruction and coaching, all the kids stood up and actually SURFED. The weather was perfect; the kids surfed, played in the water, and found starfish and even octopus in the tide pools. John and his staff were great. I'm sending my daughter to surf camp this summer.

Surfing: Sport of Kings and of SCV Residents?
by John Domke
May 2008

Every other surfer had caught a wave in or was still paddling back out and the line-up was now empty. The swell of water that approached me with its promise of hitting the shallower sandbar and evolving into a wave that would peel to the right, sent a rush of adrenaline up my spine. I turned my old, cheap, semi-waterlogged surfboard toward shore and began paddling. As the wave took form, I felt my board being lifted up by the liquid energy as the hope that I could successfully negotiate a "drop-in" and "bottom-turn" raced through my mind. It was time. I awkwardly climbed to my feet and slid down the face of the small wave, easing into a right turn at the bottom, and rode with great pride for forty yards nearly right onto the beach. I was twelve years old and the wave was only three feet high, but as surfers say I was "totally stoked". As years passed, my boards got better and more expensive and the wave became much lager and more challenging, but I will never forget that defining moment and the great sense of accomplishment, confidence, and the momentary harmony with the ocean that began the moment I actually "surfed.”

From Northern California to Mexico and all the way to surfings' Mecca, Hawaii, I have had so much good, healthy, clean fun and have made and sustained life-long friendships through surfing. In my opinion, there are many great values that come from learning to surf. Surfing gives young people (and adults) the opportunity to develop a love for the ocean and an understanding and respect for its great power and beauty. Surfing is an extremely good way to get into, and stay, in great cardiovascular and muscular shape. It assists in developing a positive and healthy lifestyle. Ultimately, surfing is just a whole lot of fun and the absolute best way to spend a day.

Teaching my own kids to surf has been a great highlight of my life. It is my desire to pass on my love and passion for the incredible sport of surfing and its potential to develop character and life skills. Starting this summer, Surf’s Up Surf Camp will be offering awesome surfing opportunities for kids and adults alike. I hope you will check us out and get “stoked” as well.

Surf's Up: Are You Ready to Learn to Surf?
by John Domke
June 2008

I am guessing that many of you Santa Clarita adults raising your families have gone through many of the life changes that I have. I can actually remember when I used to have hobbies, free time, and “my time.” With marriage and kids, my priorities changed radically. My previous free time that was spent at the beach and surfing became; AYSO, gym time, t-ball, brownies, and other various and certainly valuable activities. However, as my kids became older, it was time to get them in the water and on the surfboards. To my great pride and pleasure, my eight-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter took to it instantly and now they beg me to take them surfing. It is very cool to be able to enjoy something that I love so much and to have my children love it too. It has been a great way to spend quality time together building confidence and having fun.

This became the inspiration for Surfs Up Surf Camp. As a high school teacher with summers off, I thought it would be pretty awesome to be able to run a surf camp and day camp program to teach others how to enjoy this great sport as well. We do the driving from SCV to Ventura to a great beginner’s spot known as Mondos. With slow, soft breaking waves in a shallow and sheltered cove, anyone can learn to surf. We provide softop surfboards and full wetsuits. Only thing you or your child needs to provide is the enthusiasm and motivation to get out and have some great fun.

My staff and I are committed to safety first and getting in as much time in the water as possible. All staff will be CPR and First Aid Certified. A typical day starts with beach instruction covering water safety, ocean currents, paddling through waves, and proper surf etiquette in dealing safely with other surfers in the water. Students will then work with their surfing instructors in the water and will receive as much or as little coaching as they need. Our ratio of instructor to student will be no more than 3 or 4 to 1. We want every student that participates in our camps to have a great experience and to really learn how to surf with confidence. I hope you will consider us as an option for your children’s summer recreation. We also do birthday parties and day camps for groups, both children and adult.
