What To Bring

About Us:

Surf's Up Surf Camp is a local family owned and operated business. John Domke, Camp Director and Instructor, is a father of four and 15 year Santa Clarita Valley resident. He has been an experienced surfer for over 30 years. He is CPR and First Aid certified. John is also a 20 year credentialed high school teacher, having worked in both private and public schools. He has extensive and highly successful coaching experience at the high school and junior high levels, was a director of summer sports camps for 12 years, and has been a community volunteer for a number of different developmental sports in the Santa Clarita Valley.

John Domke and his children frequently enjoy surfing at Mondos Beach, Ventura.

Philosophy:

Safety First is our greatest emphasis for Surf Camp. Your young person will receive detailed instruction about ocean and surfing safety. Everyone will receive beach instruction before getting into the water. They will be taught about ocean currents, paddling through waves, and proper etiquette in dealing with other surfers. Surfing students will work with instructors in a ratio of 3 or 4 to one to insure proper supervision and optimal instructional opportunities. We use softtop surfboards to minimize the chance of injury. All of our surf students will be provided with a high quality fullsuit wetsuit for maximum comfort in the water. Most days we will be surfing at Mondos in Ventura County, which is a large sheltered cove that has some of the best learning waves in Southern California.

Having Fun is priority number 1! We do use some beach instruction time, but our desire is to be in the water having fun as much of the time as possible. Surfing students will work at their own comfort level and will be provided with as much or as little instructor assistance as they desire. From pushing them into waves to advising advanced surfing students how to make their own wave selection, our instructors will be in the water with your young person assisting them in having the most success and fun as possible.

Several of John Domke's friends and students participated in Saturday Surf Club during spring.

Staff:

Surf's Up Surf Camp staff members are selected first and foremost for their character, integrity, and ability to work with and relate well to young people. They love to surf and have the ability to patiently teach your young person how to safely handle themselves in the ocean and to learn and enjoy the sport of surfing. They will all have CPR and First Aid training. Most, if not all, of our staff will have been students of mine and will be fine role models for your children.
